"HE HAD LOVED BOOKS MOST ALL OF HIS LIFE --- EVEN BEFORE HE COULD READ THEM. HE WAS AN AVID READER ALWAYS. HE USED WHAT SPENDING MONEY THAT HE COULD SPARE TO BUY BOOKS." Above statement was from Ione Read about her James.
When James was 22 he married Susan Henrietta Eugenia Hicks on Dec. 27, 1893. They lived in Blum.
James and Albert bought a grocery and drug store, and James became the prescription pharmacist. James and Susan moved into the old home place in Blum in 1896 and lived there until their deaths. James died July 15, 1944. Susan died Feb. 11, 1959, which would have been a little over a year after her son Dorsey Wesley Read died.
James’ father, John Wesley Read, (he went by Wesley) was born January 5th, 1834 in Mississippi. He was one of 11 children (one was James Robert Read). Susan Charlotte Cannon Read was born in March 1, 1838 in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. Wesley moved his family from Mississippi in a covered wagon in 1866 to Hill County, Texas. They were married October 5th, 1856 in Thorp's Springs, Texas. In 1880 he described his occupation as a farmer.
He died in 1886, leaving his wife and five sons, Lemuel, Albert, Robert, James and John, and two daughters, Nettie and Sussie. The three older sons soon married, and James was left to care for his mother, younger brother and two sisters. When he moved to Texas, I believe he did so to meet up with Read family from Georgia and TN. Wesley died October 17th, 1889 in Blum, TX. He was a Presbyterian.
Wesley's father, Lemuel Read, was born February 24th, 1899 in North Carolina, his mother Mary McMurray was born in 1803 in Tenn. They were married on October 7th, 1824.
Lemuel was one of eight children. His father was William Read born 1771 and died in 1815 in Dixon, TN. His mother was Rebecca Hold, born 1770 and died in 1851. William sold an unknown person to Gabriel BODINE 100 acres on the south side of Beaverdam Swamp joining Jesse READ, PRITCHETT, for 16 pounds specie. On 26 September 1782 at Halifax Co., NC. William is listed on the Halifax Co. tax list of 1785 with 100 acres 1-free polls. In 1785. He is also shown on the Halifax Co. tax list of 1787 with 100 acres 1-white polls & 1 black polls. In 1787.
The Read family left Halifax Co. NC in the late 1790's and headed for Tennessee. The Family of William Read & his wife Rebecca Holt Read settled in Dickson Co., TN. They had several children, including a Lemuel and a daughter who married into the McMurray family.
William Read was the son of Moses Read who was born in 1732 at Isle of Wight County, Virginia and died between 1815 and 1816 in Robertson County, TN. William's mother was Elizabeth 'Betty" Pendry.

Halifax County, NC - Addendum to the Read Wills
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Harmon Read, son of Henry Read and Grandson of Peter Read of Prince George Co., VA, moved his family from IOW, VA and settled
first in Edgecombe Co, which later became Halifax Co.
Rose Edwards has forwarded you a copy of the Rev. Jesse Read will. Jesse was a son of Harmon Read and one of the first Primitive
Bapt. Ministers in NC. In NC records, you will often find the names of Harmon and Mary Pendry Read's sons written as Moses Read
Pendry, Aaron Read Pendry and Jesse Read Pendry. The sons, having been born before the parents were able to marry, because of
the lack of Anglican ministers in the area at the time, followed the norm of the day using the mother's maiden name until the parents
died, then reverting to using Read as their surname.
Harmon's father was Henry Read who died in October 7th, 1712. His mother's name was Elizabeth.
Henry's father,
Peter Read
was a farmer and was born in 1635 in Kent, England and died in 1688. His
mother's name was Ann. Peter emigrated in 1654 from England, Peter Read was in
Charles City Co. and was listed as a headright of Walter Brooks, who received
300 acres for transporting Peter Read along with 5 others.
In order to stimulate immigration, the Virginia Company, and later the English
government, offered a reward of fifty acres of land for every man, woman, and
child, transported to Virginia. Ownership of land was unheard of in England
except to the small elite class of traditional wealthy and noble families whose
people governed England and its colonies. Land ownership, even in the most
remote part of Great Britain offered the hope of a new life, not just for one's
self, but for his family and descendants. And it was an offer open to all... if
they were willing to brave the dangers, and hardships, of settling a new world.
The new arrivals in Virginia and America took on the descriptive title of "Headright",
meaning simply the "right" per "head" to fifty acres of land.
The patentee was expected to furnish each headright with the necessities of life
plus a small tract of land. The contract specified the terms of the indenture.
At the end of the time, the indentured servant (or headright) became free to
acquire his own land
Between 1661 to 1664 he was ordered to pay Curtis Laud, Constable of Weynoke 200 lbs of tobacco according to act "for bringing home his fugitive servant".
